Our Team

Susenco was founded by a team with many years experience of a range of business issues and sectors. Our directors have many years experience in technical and economic assessment of energy projects, management of commercial contracts and relationships, and managing investment in new business start-ups.

In addition to the core management team we have a powerful and experienced group of associates each of whom are expert in their respective fields. This includes expertise in measurement and monitoring, data analysis and modelling, certification issues like Energy Performance Certificates and Display Energy Certificates, heating and cooling, biomass, hydro, wind, PV, Combined Heat and Power, energy efficiency and other technologies. Our Associates have project expertise in a range of sectors including farming, universities, the food industry, the datacentre industry, and real estate.

Neil Mather (Chief Executive)

Neil has 18 years of commercial experience, working for a range of blue chip businesses such as HSBC, Masterfoods and United Biscuits.  He began in sales related roles and then progressed into general management. He has managed business portfolios worth over £250 million and teams of up to 100 people. Since 2007 he has been involved in the renewable energy sector and is a co-founder of Susenco.

Dr Mark Hinnells (Solutions Director)

Mark has been involved in energy markets for 18 years in a variety of roles including consultancy, project management, policy design and in academia.  This included technical and economic analysis that underpinned the Climate Change Levy and project managing a team of 18 to deliver the Government’s £50 million Community Energy programme.  It also includes academic research at the Environmental Change Institute at University of Oxford. He leads consultancy and assessment of development opportunities for Susenco. 

Christopher Powles (Finance Director)

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant at PwC, Christopher has spent his career in the funding and financial management of small businesses, first as founder of a VC Fund, Pi Capital, and later as co-founder and Finance Director of an on-line provider of ethical fashion that floated on AIM. As FD for Susenco he manages the raising of debt and equity. In his spare time he runs Flights Mill Community Hydro Power Limited which is an Industrial and Provident Society developing a small hydro power project. 

Key Associates

Elaine Mellish (Business Development)

Elaine started her career in the oil industry where she was a member of J.Paul Getty's personal management team.  She then moved to the property industry where she became Business Development Director for MACE Ltd in 1995. In 2003 she established her own consultancy "Mellish" and co-founded Constructing Futures Ltd in 2008. She is an adviser to the Parliamentary Group Policy Connect and Carbon Connect focusing on sustainable business, skills, and design and innovation.

Dave Williams (Business Development)

Dave is an accomplished businessman with high-level P&L responsibility with Public and Private companies. David's experience is broad and unique, ranging from world class construction, engineering and pharmaceutical projects through to the identification, administration and management of Corporate and Data Centre acquisitions, asset management and business systems reorganisation and development.

Dr Tony Benson (Wind & CHP Expert)

Tony trained as an energy engineer and started his career in R&D for industrial coal systems, writing a PhD on fluidised bed combustion.  Tony's expertise includes project development, planning applications and negotiation of commercial arrangements for power schemes up to 60MWe.  He has carried out UK energy strategy studies for major established UK companies and foreign entrants to the UK power sector.

Fiona Brocklehurst (energy efficiency and renewables expert)

Fiona has significant experience in renewable energy and energy efficiency. She has provided support to UK Government departments and the private sector. Projects have included Climate Change Agreements, wind resource assessment, screening and feasibility. Clients have included road haulage companies, supermarket chains, paving manufacturers, the Forestry Commission Scotland and the BBC.
