Susenco – the Sustainable Energy project developer
Susenco is a renewable energy developer with expertise in most renewable energy technologies including wind, anaerobic digestion, PV, Combined Heat and Power, biomass including district heating, and hydro. Our team has over 20 years experience in design, development, and delivering renewable energy schemes. Commercial buildings include offices, retail and warehousing. Over the last decade or more, many companies have sold off their real estate portfolio, and leased back the space they need. Today, more than two thirds of commercial real estate is owned by a landlord and let to a tenant. However, the leasehold relationship can get in the way of improving energy performance. Often, the landlord pays the cost and the tenant benefits.
The type of scheme we are seeking to develop
If you are interested in working with us to develop a site, we are interested in the following opportunities:
Wind farms can be controversial. But our schemes tend to be smaller (between one and three turbines, and typically 500kW to 5MW of power) either on industrial sites providing lower cost and low carbon energy to help give local companies a commercial edge, or are schemes with a significant community involvement.
Anaerobic digestion can be farm based, operate as ‘merchant plant’ often taking industrial or food waste, or on industrial sites processing waste from the site and providing heat and power to the site. We are most interested in industrial sites or farms with a connection to the gas network.
PV whilst the heat has been taken out of the large scale PV farm market, we still think, over the longer term, there is an opportunity to develop the right scheme. This might be 30 acres or more of land or roofspace either on a single site or over multiple sites.
Hydro. We would look for a minimum scheme size of around 100kW (for example, this might be either a 5M3 flow per second and 3M fall of water, or 2M3 per second and a 10M head of water).
Biomass and combined heat and power. We would be keen to explore opportunities to provide heat to large or diverse loads, such as universities, hospitals, leisure centres and new build housing.
Why work with a developer?
Some landowners or site owners will want to develop a project themselves. But that means doing all the assessment or planning application work yourself, making the investment, and carrying all the risks of failure. If we take on a site it would be under a clear legal agreement (an option and lease) where we take the risks and pay you a rent for the site for the life of the installation, and for an industrial site, offer you lower cost power and carbon savings.
Taking risk ‘off balance sheet’ can be key to a scheme happening either on an industrial site or for a farmer. Yet the landowner can still benefit significantly from the scheme. All our landowners also have the opportunity to take an equity stake in the project once a scheme has gone through planning.
