The datacentre market is in strong growth as demand for storage space outstrips capacity. Energy usage in this sector is huge, and growing, with one energy provider estimating that 10% of all energy it supplies will go to datacentres by 2012. The growth is so substantial that datacentres are being dubbed ‘the new aviation’ because of the rate at which its carbon emissions are growing. The implementation of the Carbon Reduction Commitment will highlight growing energy use in this sector, and it will face further pressure to reduce its emissions.

In addition to this, there are legitimate concerns from many quarters, including OFGEM the energy regulator, around the ability of the UK’s energy supply to keep up with demand.
